Darwin: Super Bowl Monday!

Yes, Monday!

Before breakfast, Tom and I were our walking around the deck wondering if we would indeed be able to leave at 1pm as had been announced.  Authorities had told the Captain they were hoping to be able to allow us to leave by then, so it had been passed on to the passengers.

It was a beautiful morning, not too hot yet, operative word "yet!", a perfect time for a couple of pics without going off the ship.  This unique "mooring post" was to our aft.  The dock was not long enough for us to be moored aft directly to the dock.

This is perhaps the most unique "bumper" I've ever seen!  This pic better shows the ship was too long to be moored to the dock.

And, like we had seen in Brisbane a while back, there were jellyfish here, not as many and it looks like a different type but, they were here!

During breakfast, the Cruise Director announced that Regent Corporate in Miami had been working on and had been able to secure a satellite feed so we would be able to watch the Super Bowl on the big screen in the theater!  Originally, we would have been at sea today and satellite communications at sea can be quite unpredictable, thus it had not been scheduled before.  I had planned to occasionally check online for the score!

F&B (food and beverage) folks as well as entertainment folks, really got busy and put together a party for us!  Of course, the first thing out was the cold beer!  One cannot have a Super Bowl party without cold beer!

And, to go with it, we had the obligatory popcorn, potato chips, pizza, hot dogs, hamburgers and wings and all the accompaniments!

By 10am, it ws all set up.  This is a blurry picture but, it gives the idea.

Crew even found the appropriately  colored balloons to add to the festive-ness!  Ravens vs. 49ers!

What a game it was!  And what an unplanned item to add to our brag list:  How many people can say they watched an extended (because the lights went out in New Orleans) Super Bowl live on a Monday while on a ship docked in Darwin, Australia?

We did depart Darwin a little after 1pm as had been announced and planned for.  I'm guessing crew had a plan B and a plan C had that not have happened.  By the time this pic was taken, we were well on our way.

Sitting at lunch, next to the window, Tom noticed this idyllic little island, a reminder that we would soon be traversing the islands of Indonesia.

Evening brought us to the Horizon Lounge (aft on Deck 5)  to meet out "playmates" for evening cocktails.  Maricel is one of our favorite bar waitresses!

By the time we returned to our room, we had a letter from Regent apologizing for all the delays and announcing the latest schedule revisions.  Basically, we would make all the remaining ports from here to Singapore although the Komodo visit would be a day late and would be condensed.  The Bali visit would also be condensed from two days to one.  From there we would be back on schedule.

The Sydney to Singapore cruise has really been jinxed!
  • Cyclone Oswald kept us in Brisbane an extra day and a half in addition to preventing us from visiting Whitsunday Island and Cairns, two of the three ports from which we would be able to go to the Great Barrier Reef.  The third port was to have been Townsville but that had been cancelled back in November.
  • About the time we were ready to pull up anchor in Moreton Bay off Brisbane, we had a medical emergency and a passenger had to be airlifted off the ship.
  • A young 24 year-old crew member passed away on the way into Darwin.  See prior post for more info on that
  • And, we "lost" one of our four engines.

On the happy side, sitting at a window at breakfast this morning, we saw dolphins frolicking along side of the ship!  That is a good omen that our troubles are behind us!
