Tauranga: Bubbling Mud

Our first port after Auckland was Tauranga, home of the boiling mud pools.

Steam comes up through multiple fumaroles.

Here we can see the mud spitting into the air like tomato sauce being cooked too high.
One of the many craters that have been given names, this one:  The Devil's Home.

The aroma emanating from these eruptions was less than fragrant!
This one is called "Artist's Palette", the differing colors produced by the varying chemical content of the soil.
Tourists crossing over water at boiling temperature.  If one falls in, baste for 15 minutes and serve with a dollop of hollandaise!

A far off pond seems to be in stark contrast to the other worldly sulphur emitting thermals.

We left gasping for air!!
